Easily one of the frontrunners when it comes to being purveyors of pure punishment, Bloodjinn's latest effort THIS MACHINE RUNS ON EMPTY boldly offers an utterly solid display of modern aggressive metal that the second stage of Ozzfest would gladly welcome. While the dynamics across the board are spot-on ("Truth Within", "The Unloved") and the consistent assaultive vibe is equalized across the entire 10-track excursion, this North Carloina-based quintet suffer the same fate as many of today's metalcore bands in that it becomes difficult to distinguish one from another. Despite the top-notch musicianship and a scathing vocal and guitar tandem which makes you stand up and take notice, there's a sameness attached to this disc which makes it hard to separate between them and God Forbid, Unearth, and the like. Nonetheless, the intensity featured on cuts like "Mirrored Human" and "See Through" are hard to deny, making Bloodjinn a band sitting on the bubble armed with all of the tools necessary to make it to the next level a la Killswitch and Shadows Fall.
