Serving up old school death metal depravity with a nine-track split affair, Crypticus and Scaremaker dually utilize horror themes and dark and depressive metal to their advantage. Up first is Crypticus, rising up from the catacombs with a discernible thrash-influenced sound (“End the World of Men”) and a strong use of classic film samples to give the listener thrills and chills. Scaremaker rounds out the endeavor with a five-track presentation of doom-laden tempos, unearthly vocals, and an adventurous spirit peaking through the darkness long enough for their progressive tendencies to rear their demonic heads (“From the Coffins”). -Mike SOS
