Dutch melodic death metal unit Devious have undergone some tumultuous times lately between label woes and lineup shakeups but still manage to whip up a bevy of quality aggression as shown on the seven-track WOLFHAGEN. Championing a sound in line with the likes of Lamb of God, As I Lay Dying, and Arch Enemy, this veteran outfit showcases a knack for knocking out groove-oriented and headbang-inducing riffs with rounds of blistering percussion while a domineering bass holding the heavy down (“Wolfhagen”). While the band takes a misguided experimental turn with a dub-step reworking of one of their older works, the majority of this excursion demonstrates a strong and steady flow of formulaic yet technically sound savagery. -Mike SOS
